The layout for Sactown‘s October/November 2015 feature on local newsman-made-good Lester Holt is easily one of my favorite spreads I’ve done. Obviously it’s easier to make great layouts when you have great photos, and these crisp images from Sacramento shooter Jeremy Sykes gave me more than enough of a jumping off point to make this one both sharp and impactful. There’s something confident in Holt’s posture and expression that really backed up the headline. I wanted to extend the feeling of being in-studio as he’s about to go on air. I carried the theme visually onto the next spread, as if you’re viewing this on a studio monitor before it all goes live and I placed clean layers of bold Helvetica in front of and behind him, framing him for his rise and reveal and giving some weight and gravity to it all.
